New Media: How digital is changing the world

Everyone uses it, a lot of people appreciate the advantages of changing methods, some of them are strictly against it and no one can avoid the ongoing process - the digitalisation.

But what is really changing?

Now here is my second blog in english :) I want to go deeper into the topic what impact media has into our entertainment consumption. It's clear that everyone knows what the trend nowadays are but I want to go a bit further and want to show you some interesting results.

The internet changes the media usage

Which platforms are used for entertainment nowadays?

Not so many years ago people used the newspaper for reading the latest things that happened, watched movies at the prime time and used their phone for calling and writing short messages. Only some years later the media usage changed so much, people can decide on their own what to consume where and when. But what changed most and is there an overuse?

We all know that we spend too much time on this little devices but is it really that severe? According to a study more than 90% said, they couldn’t last a day without their smartphone. Another fact: we check our smart phone every 6,5 minutes.

Like mentioned in the graphic, in the year 2018 an average person spent more than three and a half hours on their mobile phone. Already in 2019 the smartphone overtook the average time spent with watching TV. Why? Because smartphones give us nowadays so many new possibilities, especially with apps.

Social Media and other Apps

Tik Tok, the raising star

Due to the fact that the time spent on mobile devices is still raising also the time on social media gets more and more. Nowadays already 3.3 billion people are active social media users. Good for companies - because this leads to a new selling-platform to reach the audience.

As seen in the graphic in the third quarter of 2020 the new Social Media "Tik Tok" was number one of new downloaded apps with more than 63 million installs. Already in summer this year a study colleague of mine wrote an article about the trend of Tik Tok. I think this app is such a huge thing and will have an even bigger impact in the Social Media market in the common years than it now already has - but that is another story.

Tik Tok get followed in the ranking by Facebook and Instagram. It is surprising that Snapchat still occupies such a high position, because in my opinion the app got less relevant in the social media world. It is also weird that WhatsApp doesn't show up here.

The extend of Social Media

What are the effects?

But Social Media has not only it's good sites like socialising and entertaining. There are also dark ones that some believe on and some ignore. But it is clear - Social Media is addicting in a certain way. Not only that, sometimes it also gives a platform for bullying and much more.

Below you can find a very interesting infographic from "Der Bank-Blog", that represents a lot of good insights when using Social Media and also how to beat an "addiction".
